Simple Steps...

So what if I started out an accountant! I've ended up (for now) a psychologist. In the process, I've taken the journey from Dublin Ireland to the French Alps.

Like all journeys, each step along the way had to be taken, each mile traveled. Each was a simple step - I just had to put one foot in front of the other, my best foot forward.

But baby steps lead to giant leaps and it doesn't have to take a lifetime. In fact, your new lifetime can start with a couple of baby steps today.

To change your life you must change how you think. That’s different from changing what you think. I first learned this when I was a banker and it changed my life.

I grew up in an Ireland where the conventional wisdom was that you get a good education and a job for life. So I did just that. As an accountant, I practiced tax with KMPG and PwC and went on to senior leadership roles in insurance and banking.

When I was thirty five I discovered mindfulness. That was 1994 - long before you ever heard of mindfulness! But I learned about mindfulness as an antidote to normal everyday mindlessness.

I decided to study psychology. My timing was perfect - modern neuroscience and cognitive psychology was discovering how the normal brain is wired for stress. More importantly, we were discovering that you can rewire your brain by changing how you think.

I learned how to focus properly - probably for the first time in my life! I learned how you can set your mind to achieve your goals. That’s what I call proper goal-setting that works.

And I learned the meaning of success. Too often we focus on money but, when you focus on success, money looks after itself. And you end up being more happy and more successful.

So, here I am in the French Alps. We moved here with our three young children in 2002. They’re all grown up, all with good jobs in Paris. And we are living a stress-free life - yes even with all the potential stressors of working for yourself - in the here and now.
